Review: SLAVE by Sherri Hayes
The Writer's Coffee Shop; Jul 2011
Stephan has lived the lifestyle of a Dominant for five years. After several rebellious teenage years, it gave him the stability and control he had been seeking after his parent’s death.
As president of a not-for-profit foundation, he knows what his future holds and what he wants out of life. All that changes when a simple lunch with his college friend and Mentor, Daren, leads him to buying a slave.
Thrust into a situation he never thought he’d be in, Stephan can’t walk away. He is compelled to help this girl in the only way he knows how.
Brianna knows only one thing, she is a slave. She has nothing. She is nothing.
Can Stephan help Brianna realize that she is much more than just a Slave?

What really worked: SLAVE is a unique story in the genre of BDSM fiction. It's about a dom who rescues an abused young woman being held against her will as a sex slave, and then her journey begins to become whole again.
The characters and their interactions were masterfully written. After 10 months of physical, psychological and sexual abuse, Brianna is truly broken. When Stephan hears about Brianna's situation, he's compelled to help her. With his line of work, it's obvious he's a compassionate person. Even though it makes him uncomfortable, he "buys" Brianna to get her away from her master, Ian. It was so touching to see how Stephan and Brianna's relationship developed. She was so very fragile, but he was kind, consistent and patient.
What worked: I enjoyed the supporting cast too. Stephan's friends Lily and Logan are in a healthy D/s relationship, so readers could see some of their dynamic and how it compares to what Brianna experienced. I also liked Richard (Stephan's uncle) who actually did not approve of him being involved in BDSM. It was interesting to see that point of view as well.
What didn't work so much: The story ended too soon! SLAVE is not a stand-alone book, so there's a lot that still needs to be resolved. One thing that bothered me was that Ian wasn't dealt with the way he should have been. Ian is a psychopath using BDSM to really harm people (against their will), and stopping someone like that from striking again should have been a top priority. Maybe in the next book?
Final Thoughts: SLAVE is a poignant story about the first steps of Brianna's journey to find herself again. The sexual content in this book is very mild, so you'll need to look elsewhere for hot, kinky sex. (I don't think it was appropriate at this point in their relationship anyway.) This was certainly an emotional read. Brianna's story is heartbreaking, but SLAVE is an unconventional love story too. I'm ready for book two now!
